Zamosc today has about 70.000 inhabitants. Situated in a charming landscape with untouched nature, this Renaissance town with its unique old city centre, which has been included in UNESCO's World Heritage Foundation list, offers numerous tourist attractions.
The historical old town centre with the market square, the cathedral, the Zamoyski-Museum, the Arsenal, as well as the Rostocze National Park nearby are worth visiting.
The town of Zamosc was founded in 1580 by Zamoyski as a place of residence. He was the Polish King's right-hand man, his chancellor and commander-in-chief of the army.
As it was situated where important trading routes from east to west,and south to north crossed, the town, a fortress, was an importantcultural and scientific centre in Poland. After the partition of Poland Zamosc was under Austrian-Hungarian hegemony for a short time, later itwas under Russian control.
