Schwäbisch Hall

Literature

In 2013, Schwäbisch Hall will organise the child and young adult literature days of Baden-Württemberg. Cultural office and town library are already eagerly preparing the programme.

Another event of literature is approaching: in 2014, the P.E.N. centre of Germany will hold its annual conference in Schwäbisch Hall.

'It is indeed a remarkable place, and one may well travel a hundred miles before he finds such elsewhere!' Eduard Mörike, who lived for some months of 1844 at Obere Herrngasse 7, described Schwäbisch Hall like this.

Literature is highly regarded in Schwäbisch Hall. This can be deduced, p. e., from the great popularity of the town library in the Glashaus. There are top-class readings in the Literature Live series, conceived by the cultural office, that occur every other year in autumn (in turn with the Long Night of Arts).

Beate Rygiert had been the first Comburg Writer in 2007, then the city of Schwäbisch Hall and the Comburg federal academy have been awarding the 'Comburg stipendiate' since 2008. This stipendiate includes a 4-week stay in the holiday flat of Comburg castle and a cash stipendiate of 4 000 euros, taken from beneficence means of the magistrate of Schwäbisch Hall.

With regard to historical issues, the town archive will be glad to assist - for example, concerning the protected council library in the town hall. Literary events are also offered by the adult education school – e. g., the VHS author's meeting - and by many other cultural and educational institutions.

The Kunsthalle Würth arts gallery is often the host of top-class authors, e. g., within the framework of the Tübingen poetics lectureship that had been held by Susan Sonntag, Ruth Klüger, Amoz Oz, Péter Esterházy and Jonathan Franzen, among others.

The audiobook publishing company 'steinbach sprechende bücher' is located in Hall. There are many books about Schwäbisch Hall in the programme of the Swiridoff publishing company.

Some authors are living in Schwäbisch Hall, e.g., crime author Tatiana Kruse. The Hohenlohe dialect is maintained by authors like Walter Hampele and Dieter Wieland.

Moreover, Schwäbisch Hall is the home of beautiful bookstores in a nice ambience and with a large stock.
