The Galerie am Markt was founded in 1976 as an exhibition forum for contemporary art of international esteem. The gallery was managed by the town for 25 years, first by the adult education school and the culture and information office, then, between 1989 and 2000, the gallery belonged to the Hällisch-Fränkisches Museum. The town acquired a substantial collection of modern art by purchases from the exhibitions.
Sponsorship of the gallery was adopted by the art association in 2002. The art association was founded in 1997 and accommodated in the 'Hirtenscheuer am scharfen Eck' till 2001.
